To compensate for the pressure loss that occurs when natural gas is transported long distances in pipelines, pipeline compressors are used to recompress the gas to its original line pressure. In extensively branched pipeline networks in particular, there is a need to vary the amounts of gas transported and the pressure conditions considerably at the compressor stations.
